Are you promoting your skills or are you really showing that you can understand the benefits that a company gives to its customers?
Here’s four clever questions to let your business acumen shine and show that you understand the role of the customer if you’re interviewing for a work placement or job:
What are your customer’s favourite aspects of your product, so I would know what to include and expand on, when designing a new product?
This shows that you are forward thinking and confident to take your imagination and match it to what makes their customers happy. Each company will analyse their data to see which aspects of their products their customers love or the aspects they really didn’t enjoy. When they’re planning their next product they can make improvements and build on customer satisfaction.
Which new target market customers are you aiming to attract next?
This shows that you’re business savvy and thinking about how the company can grow, attract more customers and make more money. It might also help to frame more ideas and make decision of how new products could work, when you look into who those desired customers are and how they like to live.
Who would you consider to be your top five main competitors?
Asking about a company’s competitors is important – even though you should have researched these before the interview and tried to predict them, it’s always good to hear it directly from the company itself. You can make sure that if you end up working for them, you stay one step ahead of their competitors.
How do you retain your current customer base?
It’s always easier for a business to continue their positive relationship and sell to a current happy customer as opposed to spending more money attracting new ones. So have a think about what little extra aspects of design your skillset can lend itself to, to boost sales and aftercare for their customers. For example: if you’re working for game design, perhaps there’s mini spin offs from the game that can be sent to customers with a unique login, if you’re going into music production, take a leaf from Taylor Swift’s book and release ‘vault’ tracks to dedicated fans.
Asking these level of questions shows that you’re passionate about your role but crucially it shows that you are going to be placing the customer as a priority in order for your role to help the business grow.
